The Flamin' Hot Cheetos® Quesadilla

Skip the lines at Taco Bell and make it at home.

Sometime in 2011, an Alabama law firm filed a claim saying Taco Bell’s beef was incorrectly labeled as “meat.” Only 36% of it was pure; the rest were chemicals, or so the firm believed.

The case—inadvertently based on urban legends—was quickly thrown out as Taco Bell could prove its meat consisted of 88% beef. (Not a ringing endorsement, but that is the fast-food industry standard.)

The law may be on Taco Bell’s side, but its menu items tend to be of a dubious nature. Setting aside gimmicks like egg-wrapped tacos, the chain also partnered with Frito-Lay to bestow on the world horrors like Cool Ranch® Doritos® Loco Taco1 and Beefy Fritos® Burrito.

Yet, once in a while, their ideas are solid. Like the Cheetos®Quesadilla, where the time-honored Mexican dish comes filled with crunchy cheese curls. The idea is sound, but much like the Cool Ranch® Doritos® Loco Taco, the wrap is anything but crunchy. Make it at home, though, and the quesadilla lives up to its potential.

My recipe uses Crunchy Flamin’ Hot® Cheetos® for an extra oomph, but you can always experiment with variations like Crunchy Flamin’ Hot Limón® Cheetos®.

The Recipe

  • 1 flour tortilla
  • Refried beans
  • Crunchy Flamin’ Hot® Cheetos®
  • Grated cheddar cheese
  • Cacique Crema Mexicana (or sour cream)
  • (Fillings of your choice)

Spread beans across the tortilla, then toss a handful of Cheetos® across one half. Top the whole tortilla with cheese, crema, and optionally other fillings. Fold the tortilla in half, and fry each side in a no-stick pan over medium heat for about three minutes.

Quesadilla
It’s basically a baseline quesadilla, but the Cheetos add a whole new layer.

And that’s it—the whole thing doesn’t take more than ten minutes to assemble.

Meanwhile, over at Subway

In 2020, the Irish courts ordered Subway to label their bread as confectionary. And to think the chain often is believed to be the healthy one.
